Laurel eliminates Americans

NATCHEZ – The Brookhaven American League All-Stars wereeliminated from the 2005 Mississippi Dixie Youth Baseball 11-yearold state tournament Monday night, at Duncan Park’s Ballew-BowlinField. The Laurel/Jones County All-Stars shut out Brookhaven 2-0,on a complete-game, (6 innings), 3-hitter by Cole Hill.

Hill allowed 1 walk and fanned 4 Brookhaven batters in thewin.

Both teams exhibited outstanding defenses, along with solidpitching. A pair of errors by Brookhaven in the second frameallowed the only runs of the game.

For Laurel, Hill singled. Darius Dase reached on a fielder’schoice. Hill and Dase moved to third and second respectively on apassed ball. With 1 out, Cory Catchings’ sacrifice bunt scoredHill. Dase would later score on a pair of error by Brookhaven.

Brookhaven, coached by Mike Durr, Chase Fugler and Glenn Miller,got singles from Anthony Durr, Brennan Miller and Leighton Jordan.The Americans stranded the tying runs on base in the sixth asLaurel snuffed the comeback.

Corey Funk suffered the loss, giving up 2 runs and 3 hits, with3 strikeouts in 2 innings. Durr tossed the final 4 innings,allowing no runs, 1 hit, 1 walk and notching 6 strikeouts.

The Americans defeated Moss Point 4-3 in extra innings, inSaturday’s opening round but fell 4-2 to Magee on Monday in thesecond round of the double-elimination tournament.
