Lady Panthers mash Mendenhall

The Brookhaven Lady Panthers improved their record to 12-2overall and a perfect 5-0 in Division 6-4A slowpitch softball play,with an 18-1 victory over the Mendenhall Lady Tigers Tuesday atMamie Martin Field. Ole Brook’s Brittany Smith held the SimpsonCounty visitors to a pair of singles and an unearned run in thefifth, as she picked up the win.
Brookhaven travels to Florence Thursday for another divisiontest, with the JV game getting under way at 4:30 p.m. The varsitygame begins at 5:30.

Ole Brook issued 20 hits in evoking the 10-run rule in thefifth. Collecting singles for head coach Lisa Covington were TerriHodges (3), Brittany Smith (2), Katie Smith (2), Sabrina Delaughter(2) Katie Stewart (2), Jana Wallace (2), Christi Martin and AshleySykes. Martin, Sykes and Kelly Vinson each doubled. Martin tripled,while Brittany Smith homered.
The Lady Panthers got run support from Martin (4), BrittanySmith (3), Hodges (2), Sykes (2), Julie Brister (2), Stewart,Delaughter, Smith, Vinson and Brister.
“We hit the ball well tonight,” said Covington. “We have tocontinue to hit well and play good defense.”
In the JV game, Brookhaven beat Mendenhall 6-3in the junior varsity game. Delaughter and Hodges combined for a2-hitter. Delaughter authored the win.
Collecting singles for the Lady Panthers were Cary Anne Rake,Georgia Rae Rainer and Jodie Wooley. Stevie Wright tripled. Runsupport came from Rainer (2), Rake, Wright, Kelsey Freeman andKarlee Martin.
