Lady Wolves turn back Coahoma

WESSON — It wasn’t pretty but the host Co-Lin Lady Wolves didwhat they had to do and pulled out a tough 67-65 win over theCoahoma Community College Lady Tigers Monday night at MullenGymnasium in the first home game of the season.

Coahoma held a 2-point lead, 64-62, with 40 seconds left in thegame when Co-Lin sophomore guard Ashley Murphy nailed her thirdtrey of the night to put the Lady Wolves ahead 65-64.

Down the court on the next possession, Coahoma sophomore guardVictoria Sigle was fouled. Sigle made the second of 2 free throws,tying the game at 65-all with 28 seconds on the clock.

The Lady Wolves worked the clock to set up a shot for Murphyfrom 3-point range. Murphy bounced the ball off the rim butsophomore forward Anna Autman grabbed the rebound for a putbackthat gave Co-Lin a 67-65 lead with 5 seconds left.

The Lady Tigers attempted a trey that missed its mark at thebuzzer.

Co-Lin improved to 2-0 on the season while Coahoma remainedwinless at 0-2. The Lady Tigers are coached by Ira Peterson.

“We are lucky we came out with the win,” said Co-Lin women’sbasketball coach Gwyn Young after the game. “It seemed like weplayed better. We missed too many easy shots. But we reboundedwell. They played hard. They made the shots when they had to.”

Co-Lin led Coahoma 31-30 at halftime. Freshman forward DominiqueWhitfield scored the bucket with 3.5 seconds left at the end of thefirst half to push the hosts ahead. Whitfield finished the gamewith 17 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 6 assists.

The Lady Wolves started the first half strong, leading the LadyTigers 9-5 at the 14:31 mark then 13-8 with 13:05. The teamsexchanged leads thought the remainder of the first half.

Second half-action was a nail-biter as both teams exchanged 1 to2-point leads until the final buzzer.

Contributing to the Co-Lin win with 13 points and 8 rebounds wasfreshman guard Whitney Scott. Murphy finished the game with 10points, including 3 treys. Autman finished with 7 points and pulleddown 8 rebounds. Also grabbing 8 rebounds was freshman forwardErica Trahan.

Directing the Lady Tigers was Sigle with 22 points. OneshiaFrost netted 13 points. Krystal Austin followed with 11 points.
