Herring’s 29 points power Lady Bears over Loyd Star

The West Lincoln Lady Bears got a sweet Friday night victory,compliments of Candy Herring. The senior forward pumped in acareer-high 29 points, directing West Lincoln to a 63-51 triumphover the host Loyd Star Lady Hornets.
Herring smiled as she examined the scorebook after the game.Asked about her career-high performance, she said, “I’m going tohave to aim higher now.”
Herring also had 15 rebounds as the Lady Bears (1-3) realizedtheir first win of the season. Previous losses were to Class 4ABrookhaven and Class 3A foes North Pike and Franklin County.
Loyd Star ((2-2), minus two starters, got 25 points, 5 reboundsand 4 steals from freshman guard Shannon Chester. Starting forwardHaley Sones sustained a strained miniscus ligament in her kneeduring Thursday night’s win over Natchez Cathedral. Senior centerHailey Ratcliff was attending a family function in California.
“My younger players had to get out there and play,” said LoydStar coach Lori Britt. “Herring shot the ball real well. We must doa better job defending the other team’s shooters.”
The Bears built a 12-point lead in the second quarter, going up32-20 when senior guard Erica Shaw scored from the lane. Sheaccounted for 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals.
West Lincoln started the second half with a 12-1 scoring spreeand the Bears led 42-25. In the fourth quarter, Loyd Star cut itsdeficit to 11 points, 57-46, on a trey by Chester, but the Hornetscould come no closer in the final 76 seconds as West Lincoln made 6of 8 free throws.
“Candy had a good offensive game,” said West Lincoln coach LaneYoung. “Our team defense is not where it needs to be. We’ve got toplay better defense.”
Junior High Results
Ten points by Keri Easley led West Lincoln to a 23-13 victoryover Loyd Star in the junior high girls game. Kacy Smith added 5points. Hannah Knouse and Brittany Smith scored 4 apiece.
Loyd Star got 4 points from Carrie Moak.
