St. Al Flashes light up Wesson

WESSON — Cobra senior guard Mason Warren pumped in a game-high27 points but it wasn’t enough to save his team as the VicksburgSt. Aloysius Flashes posted a 64-48 win over Wesson in Tuesdaynight basketball action. Warren also pulled down 7 rebounds andnailed 3 treys.

Junior point guard Alexis Crosby led the Lady Cobras with 18points (including 3 treys) in another losing cause as Wesson fellto unbeaten St. Al 49-38. Crosby collected 7 rebounds and made 5steals.

Wesson entertains Forrest County AHS Friday for two varsitygames, beginning with the girls at 6 p.m. and followed by theboys.

St. AL 64, Wesson 48

“Free throws killed us,” said Wesson boys coach Ron Kesslerafter the game. The Cobras were 10 of 17 from the charity linewhile the Flashes were an impressive 26 of 30.

Wesson (1-7) struggled but still led St. Al (7-2) 8-4 in thefirst quarter and 22-19 at the half. The Flashes lived up to theirname in the second half, outscoring the Cobras 19-9 in the thirdquarter and 26-17 in the final frame.

“Our guys are really young,” said St. Al coach Drew McBrayer.”We are getting better. We’re playing ball.”

Following Warren in scoring for Wesson was Brandt Hood with 7points. Adrian King grabbed 7 rebounds.

“We are not playing defense at all,” said Kessler. “Basketballis two sides. You have to play defense. St. Al is a scrappygroup.

“I got good quality minutes early from my young players.”

St. Aloysius 49, Wesson 38

The Wesson girls (2-6) led St. Al (9-0) early but the LadyFlashes came back for a 12-11 lead in the first quarter. Athalftime, St. Al had pushed its lead to 24-17. Going into the finalframe, the Lady Flashes commanded a 31-26 lead.

“We lost three seniors last year,” said McBrayer. “We moved theBreaugh sisters (Annie and Amy) into their spots. They slide intothe open spots. We’re a year older.”

Leading the Lady Flashes with 17 points was Annie Breaugh. SarahKerut fired in 12 points. Netting 9 points was Amy Breaugh.

“You do the best you can,” said Wesson girls coach Jemmye AnnHelms. “We didn’t play with a lot of intensity. Perry (K. Furr) andChristy (Watson) didn’t score a lot.”

The second high scorer for the Lady Cobras was Furr with 10points and 4 steals. Tops off the backboards was Latia Payne with 8rebounds. Christy Watson grabbed 7 rebounds.

Junior varsity

The JV Cobras clobbered the Flashes 42-23, powered by MicahDavis, Matthew Cliburn and Jon Michael Cliburn with 7 pointsapiece. Netting 6 was Cody King.
