BA teams turn back Buccaneers

Brookhaven Academy’s varsity basketball teams faced a lot ofresistance from Bowling Green on Friday night. The Lady Cougarshave dominated District 4-AA the past 8 years, going undefeated indistrict playing during that stretch. The Cougars’ districtdomination has lasted a shorter time but the success story has beenthe same, not falling in a district contest the past four seasons.Friday night’s match-ups put Cougar fans in a situation that leftthe games’ outcomes uncertain until the final horn sounded.

The Lady Cougars battled a tough Lady Buccaneer team beforeprevailing with a 40-30 win. Brookhaven improved to 9-5 overall and2-0 in district play. Drew Holland Tigner scored 12 points andpulled down 5 rebounds to go along with 3 assists to lead the LadyCougars.

“I was pleased with our effort,” said Brookhaven Coach BarryGray. “Drew Holland did a good job inside and our rebounding wasbetter. We also rebounded a lot better as a team.”

Betsy Lynch and Holli Case scored 6 points in support of Tigner.Lynch was able to pull down three rebounds.

Gabby Givens led Bowling Green with 11 points in the game.Courtney Bond and Jessica Crowe each added 5 points for the LadyBucs.

Brookhaven 61, Bowling Green 52

In the varsity boys game, Brookhaven put four players in doublefigures as the Cougars overcame a 25-20 halftime deficit beforegoing on to a hard-fought 61-52 victory. Brookhaven improved to 7-1overall and 2-0 in district play with the victory.

Bowling Green came out hot, scoring 10 points before the Cougarswere ever able to register a basket. Jeremy Winborne scored thefirst bucket, two of his 14 points to get Brookhaven on thescoreboard at the 4:27 mark of the first quarter.

“We came out flat in the first half,” said Brookhaven coach DaleWatts. “We didn’t shoot the ball well and we didn’t rebound, but wewere able to turn things around at halftime and come out strong inthe second half.”

Brookhaven outscored the Bucs 41-27 in the final two quarters toseal the victory.

Winborne led Brookhaven with a double-double, scoring 14 pointsand pulling down 10 rebounds to lead Brookhaven. He also had 5assists and 4 rebounds.

Alan Gray and Kurt Perkins scored 12 points a piece, and Grayhad 5 assists. Seth Davis scored 10 points and pulled down 9rebounds. T-Boy Lynch added 11 points and 5 steals.

Junior High Action

In junior high boys action, Joshua Winborne and Garrett Poseyscored 10 points apiece in leading Brookhaven to a 45-28 victoryover the Bucs. Jameson Wright and Ty Smith added 7 pointsapiece..

Drake Adams led Bowling Green with 7 points. Brady Edwards added6 points.

In junior high girls action, Jordan Langston scored 10 pointsand Nicole Smith added 8 in leading Brookhaven to a 34-9 whippingof the Lady Bucs. Whitney Crowe led Bowling Green with 4points.
