Ruth E. Adkins

Graveside services for Ruth Adkins, of Ridgeland, formerly ofBrookhaven, are 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 at Easthaven Cemetery.Brookhaven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Adkins, 88, died Jan. 17, 2006, at The Arbor Nursing Homein Ridgeland. She was born in Hope, Ark., on June 7, 1917, toErnest Hollinger and Myrtle Flanagan Hollinger.

She was a retired sales clerk for Phillips Military Surplus. Shewas a member of Brookway Church of Christ.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, ShermanAdkins; and a son, Perry Adkins.

Survivors are her sons, Gerald Adkins, of Starkville, and RandyAdkins, of Brookhaven; her daughters, Judy Phillips, of Brookhaven,and Laura Lea Cobb, of Starkville; six grandchildren; and twogreat-grandchildren.

Nell Ruth Laird Newkirk

Graveside services for Nell Ruth Laird Newkirk, of St. Charles,Ark., are 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20 at New Salem Church of ChristCemetery.

Visitation is Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Brookhaven FuneralHome.

Mrs. Newkirk, 60, died Jan. 16, 2006.

She attended St. Charles First Baptist Church and St. CharlesMethodist Church. She was active in DeWitt Lions Club, Friends ofthe White River Refuge and Mageire Home Demonstration LadiesGroup.

Survivors are her husband, Robert B. “Bob” Newkirk, of St.Charles; her parents, Ira and Tommie Laird, of Natchez; her son,Craig Madar, of St. Joe, Fla.; her three children through marriage,Carr Newkirk, of Plano, Texas, and Amelia Newkirk Elam and BruceNewkirk, both of Stuttgart, Ark.; and eight grandchildren.
