West Lincoln sweeps Loyd Star

West Lincoln got out the broom Tuesday night and swept Loyd Starin Jack Case Gymnasium. The hosts made it a 3-game sweep on theseason as the Lady Bears prevailed 42-36 and the Bears won 64-59over the Hornets.

Loyd Star hosts Hinds AHS Friday for Division 6-2A action whileWest Lincoln invades Salem Friday for Division 7-1A games.

Senior post Talisha Fells sank a short jumper to regain the leadfor West Lincoln at 35-34 with 1:56 left to play. In the previoustransition, Loyd Star’s Brittany Brown had sacked a trey from thecorner for a brief 34-33 advantage.

Senior guard Britnee Smith led West Lincoln with 13 points andadded 3 assists. Candy Herring chipped in 10 points and 6 rebounds.Playmaker Erica Shaw scored all 7 of her points in the fourthquarter, including a 5-of-6 showing at the free throw line in thelast 76 seconds of the game. Shaw also had 5 rebounds and 5assists.

“We turned the ball over and made some bad passes,” said WestLincoln coach Lane Young. “All of our games seem to be sloppy.Erica stepped up and made her free throws at the end.”

The Lady Bears raised their record to 10-6. Loyd Star fell to7-11.

“We had too many unforced turnovers,” said Loyd Star girls coachLori Britt. “We didn’t block out and rebound.”

Senior center Hailey Ratcliff carried Loyd Star with 18 points,7 rebounds and 4 steals. Shannon Chester had 8 points and 4assists.

West Lincoln 64, Loyd Star 59

West Lincoln post players Bradleigh Rice and Jeremy Byrddirected the victory with 14 and 13 points respectively. They eachhad 10 rebounds.

Playmaker Aaron Shaw had 13 points in the win. Guard StephenJones pumped in 11 points before fouling out with 49 seconds leftto play. Leading scorer Shane Lynch was held to 8 points and 4assists.

“We played well in the first half but Loyd Star outhustled us inthe second half,” said Coach Young. “We were lucky to win.”

Young’s Bears hiked their record to 13-3. Loyd Star fell to8-8.

Loyd Star got a game-high 29 points from senior guard TylerWilliford. He also had 4 steals.

Down 43-28 at halftime, the Hornets came back strong, sparked byWilliford’s offensive show. A free throw by Williford reduced histeam’s deficit to 3 points, 60-57, with 49 seconds left in thegame.

Shaw cashed in 3 of 4 free throws and Lynch hit 1 freebie in thelast 44 seconds to preserve the win.

“We had a terrible first half,” said Loyd Star coach Gene(Moochie) Britt. “We had three starters with three fouls beforehalftime.

“At halftime, I told our kids they would have to play a lotharder in the second half and they responded,” Britt continued. “Iwas proud of their effort.”

On the backboards, center Ricky Barnes collected 9 rebounds forLoyd Star. Adam Case had 8 rebounds and Adam Case 7.

Seventh Grade Action

In the girls game, West Lincoln whipped Loyd Star 34-6, led byKatie Mullins with 12 points. Alexis Cook, Haley Ainsworth, KarliHerrington and Jessica Franklin had 4 points apiece.

Loyd Star got 4 points from Sarah Falvey.

In the boys game, West Lincoln beat Loyd Star 37-29 as MattMagee pumped in 13 points. Kory Nunnery added 6 points, SawyerPepper 5 and Jake Shelby and Logan King 4 apiece.

The Hornets got 22 points from Zach Smith.
