Joe Smith

Services for Joe Smith, of Brookhaven, are 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan.31 at Greater Mt. Olive M.B. Church with burial in the churchcemetery.

Visitation is today from noon until 7 p.m. with family presentfrom 6 to 7 p.m. at R.E. Tyler Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith, 68, died Jan. 28, 2006, at Countrybrook LivingCenter. He was born on July 24, 1937, to Jesse Smith and Mary CainSmith.

He was a retired educator from the Brookhaven Public Schools andthe Liberty Public School systems. He was a graduate of JacksonState University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree anda Master’s Degree in Science Education. He taught chemistry,physics and general science. He was a member of Greater Mt. OliveM.B. Church where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board. He wasalso a member of Reaching Out To Another Person (ROTAP) outreachministry. He loved to tell funny puns.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, RolandSmith; and his sisters, Atrice Hilliard, Annie Ruth Boston andDoris Tyner.

Survivors are his wife, Artherette Thompson Smith, ofBrookhaven; his daughter, Vonda Smith, Ph.D., of Washington D.C.;his brother, Elkener Smith, of Brookhaven; and his sisters, VelmaSmith Lee and Massaree Lewis, both of Brookhaven.

Gladys S. Stone

Services for Gladys S. Stone, of Brookhaven, were 2 p.m. Sunday,Jan. 29 at Brookhaven Funeral Home with burial in Macedonia BaptistChurch Cemetery.

Mrs. Stone, 90, died Jan. 26, 2006, at Hamilton Medical Centerin Dalton, Ga. She was born in Brookhaven on July 13, 1915, toHenry Smith and Hattie Durr Smith.

She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her brothers, JohnButler Smith and Virgil Smith; and her sisters, Samantha Smith, AdaSmith, Ruby Case, Alice Warren and Radie Smith.

Survivors are her son, Ralph A. Smith Sr., of McComb; herdaughter-in-law, Louette Smith, of McComb; her daughter, Sarah N.Bryant, of Dalton; her sisters, Inez Dixon, Louise Lynn and LoisDavis, all of Brookhaven; her grandchildren Ralph Smith Jr., ofMcComb, Richard Smith and his wife, Jessica, of Brookhaven, SydneyWilson and her husband, Mark, of Brookhaven, Stephany Smith, ofTuscaloosa, Ala., Cameron Smith and his wife, Candice, ofBrookhaven, Elanie Montalvo and her husband Frankie, of McComb,Andrew Bryant, of Atlanta, Ga., and Adrian Bryant and his wifeHolly, of Dalton; and her great-grandchildren, Gabe and PennWilson, of Brookhaven, Allie and Zachary Smith, of Brookhaven, MiaChristina Montolvo, of McComb, and Landon Bryant and Henley Bryant,both of Dalton.
