Brookhaven School District board members were all smiles Tuesdaywhen they learned the results of last fall’s state testing atBrookhaven High School.

During the board’s monthly meeting, Superintendent Lea Barrettreported the district had seen a significant improvement in scoresfor the state Subject Area Tests, which are administered twice ayear.

“For the first time for any state test, 100 percent of ourstudents passed the Algebra I test,” said Barrett. “We had 13scores over 400.”

Barrett said the state average on the test is around 300. Shesaid 400 is a score district officials use to signify outstandingstudent accomplishment.

Barrett also reported that BHS student Julia Pendley made aperfect score of 500 on the Algebra I test. Perfect scores wereachieved in Biology state tests by students Blaise Braden, JohnMichael Britt, Maggie Cupit, Owen Smith and Shelby Tapp. Also inBiology, the district had 15 scores over 400.

“Those are the best BHS scores we’ve ever had, particularly inBiology and Algebra I,” she said of the Fall 2005 results.

In U.S. History, there were 11 scores over 400 in the district,while two students had results over 400 in English II.

The results of state Subject Area Tests given in Spring 2006will not be known until the fall.

In other points of interest, Barrett informed the board of therecent presentation by KDMC officials for all districtadministrators on the difference in a heart attack and cardiacarrest and the use of defibrillators.

The hospital is working on a grant that will provide andautomatic external defibrillator (AED) units for each school andfor the BHS field house. Those units will be an addition to the AEDunit recently purchased by the district, said Barrett.
