Lady Pantthers run to title

Freshman distance runner Lisa Alexander set the pace Fridaynight for Brookhaven’s Lady Panthers on King Field. Alexander wonthe 3200-meter and 800-meter runs, directing Ole Brook to a firstplace team trophy in the Bank of Brookhaven Invitational.

Senior sprinter Angel Weston was another first place winner forthe Lady Panthers, taking the 200-meter dash. Ole Brook accountedfor 136.5 points to beat runner-up Hinds AHS which scored 121 inthe 6-team field. Jewell Sumner (La.) was third with 109.5points.

In the boys division, Ole Brook was third behind Hinds AHS andVicksburg. Hinds AHS won with 155 points and Vicksburg scored 123.The Panthers were third with 99 points and Clinton was fourth with79.

“I wanted to do better in the one mile (1600 meter) but I wastoo tired after the 3200,” said Alexander. She recovered enoughstrength to win the 800-meter run. She was seventh in the 1600.

Alexander’s time of 14:49.0 was nearly 2 minutes better than therunner-up. She posted a time of 2:58.96 in the 800. Teammate AleshaIrvin was second in 3:01.98.

“I was proud of our girls,” said Ole Brook track coach PatrickHardy. “Lisa did a great job in the distance events and Angel gotus a first in the 200.”

Overall, Hardy said he was pleased with his boys team. “HindsAHS (Class 2A) and Vicksburg (5A) are contenders for state in theirclassifications. We did well to finish third.”

The Panthers were paced by senior sprinter Anthony Caffie whowon the 200-meter dash in 22.94. He was a close second to MarlonMaxie (11.06) of Vicksburg in the 100-meter dash with a time of11.09.

“This was the first time for me to run the 200,” said Caffie. “Igot beat by a chin in the 100. I didn’t know he (Maxie) was thatclose to me.”

The Lady Panthers got a series of second place finishes andpiled up points. Kiesha Winston, 100-meter dash; Tamara Edwards,100-meter hurdles; and Swayze Black, high jump; wererunners-up.

Ole Brook’s 4×100 relay team, consisting of Joa’hanna McDanielDavida Renfro, Lakesha Winston and Weston were second. Weston,Winston, Renfro and Audreyanna Fields were third in the 4×200.Irvin, Porschia White, Shaquanna Williams and Napassia Gilmore werethird in the 4×400.

Ole Brook’s boys got a first place from Montral Smith in the110-meter hurdles. Smith posted a time of 15:41, beating runner-upJohnny Jones of Clinton who finished in 16.38.
