McComb slips past Franklin County

McCOMB — In a game that saw everything from 31 combined runs to19 total fielding errors, the McComb Tigers edged the FranklinCounty Bulldogs in diamond action 16-15 Thursday afternoon.Franklin County drops to 1-10 with the defeat.

The Tigers, members of the powerful Region 6-4A took an opening1-0 lead against the Region 7-3A Bulldogs in the first frame.

Franklin County claimed the lead 4-1 in the second, off a deepcenterfield blast from Cable McMinn. It was the Bulldogs first homerun of the season.

McComb kept the pace in bottom half of the second by scoringthree runs off an Alonzo Harris 3-run homer to tie things up at4-apiece.

Franklin County answered back by scoring five and four runs inthe top half of the fourth and fifth respectfully. The Bulldogsheld a 13-5 lead going into the bottom half of the fifth.

Harris again put McComb on his back with a dramatic two-runhomer in the fifth, as McComb scored five runs in the inning to cutthe Bulldogs lead to 13-10.

The Tigers took the lead 15-14 in the bottom half of thesixth.

In the seventh, am RBI double by McMinn help secure a tie withthe Tigers once again. McComb answered with a Chris Flemingsacrifice fly to score Matt Howell from third to end the game.Howell reached base on a single and stole two bases.

Bulldog senior Dann Griffin went the distance, striking six outand walking five. Griffin threw 136 pitches.

Dennis Boyd took the win for McComb.

At the plate, Harris led all batters with two home runs for fiveRBI’s. Cornellious Stewart added a double and a single.

For Franklin County, McMinn had a homer and two singles forthree RBI’s. Dane Hodges and Jordan Hunt each added a double and asingle each.
