Brookhaven whips McComb 12-0

Brookhaven ace Ashley Sykes hurled a one-hitter on a cold, windyThursday night to power the host Lady Panthers to a big 12-0fastpitch softball district win over the McComb Lady Tigers atMartin Field.

Sykes (11-5) fanned 8 batters and allowed 1 hit in 4 1/2 inningsbefore the game was called under the 10-run rule in the top of thefifth.

The Lady Panthers collected 13 big hits. Brookhaven travels toWest Lincoln today for a doubleheader. The junior varsity gamebegins at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity at 6.

“We played a good ball game,” said Brookhaven head coach LisaCovington after the win. “This was our third win over McComb.Ashley pitched a great ball game.”

The was scoreless in the first inning but Brookhaven came tolife in the bottom of the second inning, driving in 8 runs to the8-0 lead.

Katie Smith led off the second with double then stole third basethen home plate on a passed balls for a 1-0 lead. SabrinaDelaughter smashed a triple. Christi Martin’s sacrifice bunt scoredDelaughter and push the lead to 2-0. Katie Stewart walked and KellyVinson faked a bunt and singled to first base. Terri Hodges rippeda hard single to drive in Stewart for the 3-0 lead. Hodges stolesecond base then teammates Hannah Lowman and Brittany Smith hitback-to-back singled to score Vinson for the 4-0 advantage. Hodgespushed the Lady Panther lead to 5-0 after stealing home plate on apassed ball. Sykes singled to score Lowman and Brittany Smith togive the hosts a 7-0 lead. Katie Smith walked. Christi Martinsingled to score Sykes for the eighth run.

In the bottom of the third, the Ole Brook bats came to lifeagain for 4 runs that pushed the hosts lead to 12-0 over thevisitors. Vinson led off with a double and was replaced by pinchrunner Karlee Martin. Hodges sacrificed to drive Martin to thirdbase. A single by Lowman drove in Martin for the 9th run. BrittanySmith and Sykes ripped back to back singles that led to Lowmanbeing tagged out at third base. Katie Smith walked. Delaughterdrove in 3 runs and was tagged out at third base for the final outof the inning.

Paige Heming was the losing pitcher with no strikeouts, 4 walksand 13 hits allowed. K.J. Perkins doubled.

Junior varsity results

The Lady Panthers recorded an 8-3 victory over the Lady Tigersin JV action. Hodges (8-1) posted the win.
