Lawrence Co. rips Port Gibson

MONTICELLO – The Lawrence County High Cougars swept a Division6-4A baseball double-header against the Port Gibson Blue WavesThursday night at Jimmie Davis Park in Division 6-4A action.

In the first game, Lawrence County scored 8 first-inning runsand cruised to a 12-0 win. In the second game, LCHS scored 12 inthe first, and won 13-0 in a game that was halted after 2innings.

With the wins, Cory Keyes’ Cougars improved to 15-1 overall, and10-1 in Division 6-4A play. Port Gibson, under coach RichardWebster, is still seeking its first win. The Blue Waves are 0-11 inthe division.

“Our guys did a good job,” Keyes said. “It was an absolutelymiserable night, with all the cold and wind, to be playingbaseball. Considering the conditions, I thought our guys stayedpretty focused and took care of their business.”

Port Gibson got just 1 hit in the double-header, a single byDontrell Bands in the first game. Only 2 Blue Wave players got asfar as third base, as LCHS pitchers Jake Russell, Mackenzie Woods,and Marty Ballard kept them in check.

Russell started the first game, but worked just 2 innings. Hestruck out 5 of the 6 Port Gibson batters he faced. Junior thirdbaseman Mackenzie Woods relieved Russell and threw 3 qualityinnings in relief. He allowed 1 hit, walked 2, and struck out5.

Marty Ballard threw a 3-inning no-hitter in the second game.Ballard walked 5, but he also struck out 5.

Lawrence Co. 12, Port Gibson 0

In the opening game, Lawrence County scored 8 runs on 4 hits inthe first inning, benefiting from 4 Port Gibson errors. JohnathanStephens had 2 singles in the inning. Ballard also had a single,and Taebyus Smith had a double.

In the second, LCHS scored 3 times with getting a base hit, asPort Gibson made 5 consecutive errors. In the third, Ballard andNick Jackson had hits as Lawrence County scored another run. JustinHewitt and Corey Jones also had singles.

Lawrence Co. 13, Port Gibson 0

In the late game, the Cougars scored 12 runs in the first.Jackson had a single and a double. Smith whacked a 2-run homer.Stephens and Trent Hartzog added singles.

In the bottom of the second, Lawrence County added a single run,as Ricardo Barnes had a single.

Lawrence County and Port Gibson will wrap up their 3-game seriesthis afternoon with a 4 p.m. game at Port Gibson.
