Bulldogs upset Cougars

BUDE — Ranked third in the state and controlling a 10-3 lead,the Lawrence County Cougars thought for sure they had the young andinexperienced Franklin County Bulldogs right where they wantedthem.

Think again…

The Bulldogs, riding a string of early season losses and playerdefections to other sports, put together a game to remember in theSwamp Saturday afternoon as they beat the highly rated Cougars14-12 in seven innings of play to end Lawrence County’s 16 gamewinning streak.

“It was a good win for our program and these guys,” said Bulldoghead coach Johnny Daves. “We played solid baseball. We put the ballin play and made almost no errors.”

Franklin County (5-11) used the hot hand of junior pitcher CableMcMinn down the stretch to cool the red hot bats of LawrenceCounty. McMinn struck out two Cougars, as he worked the final twoinnings of play.

“It was a team effort,” added Davis. “Our guys played hard.”

Trailing 10-3, the Bulldogs went on a scoring rampage in thefifth and sixth innings off RBI hits from Ben McDowell, John PaulSullivan, Dane Hodges, Adam Smith, and Dann Griffin.

The Bulldogs took the lead in the sixth and never looked back,as McMinn replaced Griffin on the mound to close the game out.

“It was awesome,” said Griffin following the game, about hisBulldogs come from behind victory.

Griffin threw five complete innings, striking out four andwalking three. McMinn came in and shut the door in the sixth andseventh respectfully for the win.

For the Cougars (20-2), McKenzie Woods absorbed the loss. Woodsreplaced Cougar starter Zachary Thomas in the fifth. Woods struckthree out.

At the plate, Woods had two singles and a double. Thomas platedthree singles, while Mitch Jackson and Jonathan Stevens each addeda double and a single.

For the Bulldogs, Hodges had a double and two singles, whileMcDowell, Smith, and McMinn plated RBI doubles apiece.

The Bulldogs will host North Pike Tuesday night beginning at5:00, while the Cougars play host to Vicksburg Friday night inMonticello beginning at 7:00.
