Police identify shooting victim

Police have identified the shooting victim in a homicide at aBrookhaven hotel early Friday morning.

Garland Donny Rainey, 24, of 1019 Bullock Road in Magnolia, wasfound in an outside breezeway at Lincoln Inn and Suites afterpolice received a 911 call at 12:56 a.m. Friday, said AssistantChief Nolan Jones.

Rainey was originally thought to be a Louisiana evacuee who wasstaying in the surrounding area. Hoever, investigators discoveredFriday the shooting victim had begun to put down more permanentroots in the area.

“He had already established residency in Magnolia after(Hurricane Katrina),” Jones said. “He was originally from NewOrleans.”

Rainey had been shot once, Jones said. He later died at King’sDaughters Medical Center.

Jones could not say why the victim was at the hotel that night.The assistant chief reported some progress in the case, but saidinvestigators are continuing to interview witnesses and familymembers to determine Rainey’s movements that night.
