Officers assaulted during drug arrest

A confrontation with law enforcement officers Friday during adrug arrest at an apartment complex has landed a Brookhaven man astay in the Lincoln County Jail.

Willie Young, 26, of 146 Cedar St., was arrested and chargedwith aggravated assault on a police officer and sale of narcoticsafter the incident. He remains in jail today.

A preliminary hearing will be held Tuesday.

Brookhaven Police Chief Pap Henderson released preliminaryinformation Monday and said additional information is forthcoming.He did say that many rumors surrounding the incident wereunfounded.

“You need to clarify that a police officer was not shot,”Henderson said. “That lie has been going on all weekend.”

Undercover narcotics agents bought drugs from Young Friday. Thepurchase led to an attempted arrest.

Young alledgedly broke away during the arrest and led twoofficers on a foot chase, Henderson said, and the assault came asthe officers apprehended him.

One officer received very minor injuries during the assault,said Assistant Chief Nolan Jones.
