Brook Nationals eliminate Copiah

The Brookhaven Nationals stayed alive in the Dixie YouthBaseball Major League North Subdistrict Six Tournament Friday nightby defeating the Copiah County All-Stars 8-2 in an elimination gameat Keystone Field.

The Nationals, coached by Chase Fugler, Stan Jones and ChrisTravis, rebounded in a big way. following their 14-0 loss toNatchez Thursday, where they went hitless.

Against Copiah, the Nationals banged out 10 hits. They were ledby Zach Ashley, Blake Fugler, J.D. Sones and Caleb Dunaway with 2hits apiece. Sones had a triple, while Dunaway doubled. Will Lucasand Jacob Phillips singled.

Ashley got the Nationals going in the top of the first with asingle on the first pitch of the game. Two batters later, Fugler’ssingle scored Ashley for a 1-0 lead.

The Nationals got single runs in the second and third inningsfrom Tyler Roberts and Ashley for a 3-0 cushion.

After a scoreless fourth, the Nationals were able to score 5runs in the final 2 innings to keep their tournament hopesalive.

Fugler authored the win for the Nationals. In 2 innings, he gaveup 1 run on 1 hit, walking 1 and fanning 3 Copiah batters. DanielHuckaby and Austin Travis each tossed 2 innings of relief.

Run support for the Nationals came from Ashley (2), Fugler,Taylor Jones, Roberts (2), Huckaby and Phillips.

Copiah, coached by John Pyron, Jay Strait and Travis Murphy, gottheir runs from Bryce Berry and Jonathan Sherman. Singles were byBerry, Danaher Broom, J.P. Campbell and Cody Lack. Shermantripled.

Josh Mattingly suffered the loss for Copiah. He allowed 3 runson 6 hits, walking 3 with no strikeouts in 3 innings. Campbell andBerry saw an appearance on the mound.
