Brookhaven Academy pounds Prentiss

Brookhaven Academy ran its record to a perfect 6-0 on the yearFriday night by defeating the visiting Prentiss Christian SchoolSaints 43-20. The Cougars improved to 3-0 in District 6-AA play andguaranteed themselves at least a share of the district title.Prentiss dropped to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in district play.

“We got the win and that’s important, but we made a lot ofmistakes.” said BA head coach Bo Milton. “We need to work on a lotof things as a team, but it’s always good to be able to play someyounger guys and get them some experience. Everyone got to playtonight and we got the win, so we’ll take it.”

Brookhaven struck first at the 6:42 mark in the first quarter.After a Prentiss fumble, the Cougars marched 61 yards in fiveplays, capped off by a 21-yard run by quarterback Price Sessums.Brookhaven caught the Saints sleeping on the extra point try andCorey Dickerson ran in for the 2-point conversion, giving theCougars an 8-0 lead.

The Cougar defense went right back to work on the ensuing Saintdrive, quickly forcing a three and out. After the Saints could onlymanage a 9-yard punt, Brookhaven took just three plays for Sessumsto find Seth Cliburn in the corner of the end zone from 18 yardsout, pushing the Cougar lead to 15-0 with 3:17 remaining in thefirst quarter.

Prentiss got its only score of the first half at the 11:04 markof the second quarter as Tyler Burrow made a beautiful fingertipcatch on a pass from Garrett Jackson. Brookhaven blocked the extrapoint attempt, making the score 15-6.

It took Brookhaven just 15 seconds off the game clock torespond, as Sessums took the ensuing kickoff and streaked down thesideline for an 85 yard touchdown return. Dickerson added the PATfor a 22-6 Brookhaven led with 10:49 remaining. The Cougars addedanother score at the 5:40 mark as Bradley Allred scored on a 1 yardrun, giving the hosts a 29-6 lead at the half.

Brookhaven was able to add two insurance scores in the thirdquarter, giving them a 43-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.Dickerson scored the first touchdown of the second half at the10:21 mark on a 33 yard run. Sessums added his final score of thenight with 5:14 remaining in the quarter on a 68 yard run.Dickerson kicked both extra points.

Prentiss tacked on two scores late in the game as GavinDaughdrill scored on an 18 yard run with 6:23 remaining, closingthe score to 43-13. He added another score with 2:23 remaining on a44-yard run.

Evan Broome added both extra points for the Saints, ending thescoring at 43-20.

Sessums led the Brookhaven offense with 123 yards on 5 attemptsand two touchdowns. He was 4 for 9 through the air for 72 yards anda touchdown.

Dickerson followed with 59 yards on 5 carries. Johnathan Whitewas able to pick up 38 yards on 8 carries.

Daughdrill led Prentiss with 141 yards on 17 carries. Jacksonwent 14 of 24 through the air for 140 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Aaron Douglas led the Brookhavendefense with 10 tackles. Kolby Byrd made 9 stops. Steven Watts andBrandon Smith made 5 tackles a piece. Bradley Allred and CoreyDickerson each recovered a fumble.

Brookhaven hosts Bowling Green, La. Friday night for homecomingin a non-district game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
