Helen Louise McCharen Gordon, 82, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006,at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday inthe funeral home chapel with burial to follow in Lakewood MemorialPark.
Visitation is today from 4 until 7 p.m. and after 11 a.m. onTuesday at Lakewood Funeral Home in Jackson.
Mrs. Gordon was born Dec. 14, 1923, at Toccopola, the eldestchild of Charles D. and Genera P. McCharen. In 1926, the familymoved to Jackson, where she attended Jackson Public Schools,graduating from Central High School in the class of 1941. Sheattended Belhaven College and was employed in the draftingdepartment at Southern Bell Telephone Company until her marriage toErnest W. Gordon on Oct. 31, 1943.
A member of First Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Gordon was alongtime member of Alta Woods Presbyterian Church, where she tookcare of the infants in the nursery for about 35 years. She wasactive in volunteer services for many years at the MississippiBaptist Medical Center, the American Postal Workers Union Auxiliaryand American Legion Auxiliary, and was a member of the MondayMorning Playhouse.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest W. Gordon andtheir daughter, Judith Lynn Gordon Collins and husband, RobertCollins and her sister Hazel M. Lawrence.
She is survived by her sons, Kenneth Lee Gordon and wifePhyllis, of Ruth, and William David Gordon, of Jackson; hergrandson, Andrew Michael Gordon and wife Trena; her granddaughter,Allison Leanne G. Flynn; her great-granddaughter, Macie AnsleighFlynn; her sisters, Dorothy Weathersby and husband William, ofTerry, and Rosanne Fischer and husband Henry, of Jackson; and anumber of nieces and nephews and their families.
