Business owner dies in accident

A Brookhaven family is mourning the loss of a loved one thismorning after a Thanksgiving Day accident in Jefferson County.
George “Swamper” Winborne, a resident of Brookhaven and owner ofPositive Pest Control, was on a hunting trip with relatives onPiedmont Road in the Union Church area of Jefferson County when theaccident occured, said Jefferson County Deputy Coroner RobertRollins. It appears Winborne exited his vehicle and it somehowrolled over him, the coroner said.
“I pronounced him dead at approximately 10 a.m. yesterday,”Rollins said.
The accident is still under investigation, the coroner said.
“This is very traumatic for the family,” Rollins said.
Gary Blair, a family friend and fellow Brookhaven Lions Clubmember, said Winborne was a “great man” and would be missed by thecommunity as well as the Brookhaven Academy family.
“He was always very active and supportive of all the Lions’projects,” Blair said. “I got involved with him when my son went toBrookhaven Academy.”
Blair said everyone at BA called Winborne “Pops.”
“Louisiana to north Mississippi, he and Mrs. Doris were alwaysthe first ones there,” Blair said about the Winbornes’ attendanceat Cougar sporting events.
Riverwood Family Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements,which are incomplete.
