Bears, Lady Hornets dump opponents

BOGUE CHITTO — The West Lincoln Bears and the Loyd Star LadyHornets kicked off the first day of the Lincoln County Round RobinTournament with a pair of lopsided wins.

Bradleigh Rice pumped in a game-high 25 points to direct theWest Lincoln boys to a 70-48 win over Loyd Star.

In the girls game, Laura Britt and Haley Sones sparked theundefeated Lady Hornets with 14 points apiece on their way to a47-17 victory.

Loyd Star meets Enterprise today in the 4 p.m. girls game and5:15 boys contest. Saturday night, the Hornets meet the hostBobcats at 6:30 and 7:45 in the final games.

West Lincoln 70, Loyd Star 48

“We weren’t ready to play,” said Loyd Star boys coach Gene”Moochie” Britt following the game. “We played pretty bad tonight.”Britt said his team had not played since Nov. 28 against BogueChitto. (West Lincoln played last Tuesday against Salem).

West Lincoln, coached by Lane Young, jumped on Loyd Star in thefirst quarter for an 19-5 lead. At halftime, the Bears (4-7) wereleading the Hornets 30-16. Going into the final frame, West Lincolnpushed its lead to 21 points, 48-27.

The Bears were near perfect from the free-throw line, netting 21of 22 freebies. Rice was 11 of 12 and Aaron Shaw finished with aperfect 8-8.

Contributing to the West Lincoln win with 22 points was Shaw.Jeremy Byrd finished with 8 points.

Matthew Henderson fired in 23 points, including four treys, topower the Hornets (5-2). McKinley Hamilton and Glenn Thomasfinished with six points apiece.

Loyd Star 47, West Lincoln 17

The height and aggressiveness of the Loyd Star girls kept WestLincoln out after the first four minutes. The Lady Bears led 5-4 atthe 5:05 mark for the last night as the Lady Hornets took advantageof the backboards and inside game to put together a 13-4 firstquarter lead. At the half, the hosts led the visitors 28-7. Goinginto the fourth quarter, Loyd Star commanded a 40-10 lead.

Loyd Star, coached by Jan Delaughter , improved to 8-0 with thewin. Adding support with six points each were Dakota Brooks andShannon Chester.

The Lady Bears (2-8) were led by Ashley Montgomery with fivepoints. Titianna Marshall added three points.
