Hood’s 42 points power Wesson over Loyd Star

WESSON — Before a rowdy, capacity crowd, Wesson senior pointguard Brandt Hood had the best game of his career. Hood scored agame-high 42 points in powering the Cobras to a big 67-60 District6-2A win over the Loyd Star Hornets Friday night.
At halftime, Hood had 19 points, including 5 of his 6 treys onthe night. He had 5 of 6 free throws and finished going 12 of 15from the charity line. Hood also grabbed 8 rebounds.
With the win, Wesson improved to 10-7 overall and 2-1 indivision play. Loyd Star fell to 9-6 on the season and 1-2 indivision play.
“It was our best game of the season,” said Wesson boys coach RonKessler after the win. “Brandt had his best performance of theyear. We came prepared. We had great defense tonight.”
It was close right down to the end. Loyd Star led Wesson 47-44with 7:44 left in the fourth quarter. Josh Hood’s field goalfollowed by Brandt Hood’s trey put the Cobras back on top 49-47with 6:55 on the clock.
The Hornets cut the deficit to 54-53 on a jumper from GlennThomas with 3:25 on the clock. A field goal by Cody King and a3-point play by Brandt Hood gave the hosts a 6-point, 59-53, edgewith 2:29 remaining.
Loyd Star made another run at Wesson with 50 seconds left on abig trey from Matthew Henderson that cut the hosts’ lead to 62-60.The Cobras went to their stall game and the Hornets had to foul.Down the stretch, Brandt Hood was 5 of 6 from the charity line tosecure the win.
“We made some turnovers and missed some easy shots,” said LoydStar coach Gene (Moochie) Britt. “We didn’t play that well in thefirst half.”
In the first quarter, Loyd Star jumped on Wesson for a 7-0 leadwith 4:31 left before Brandt Hood hit his first of 6 treys to getthe Cobras running. The Hornets led 11-10 as the first quarterended.
Loyd Star led most of the second quarter until the 2:27 markwhen Hood hit another trey to put Wesson up 18-17. The Cobras wenton an 11-2 scoring run to take a 29-19 lead in at halftime.
The Hornets came back in the third quarter and took a 29-28 leadover the Cobras at the 5:26 mark on a field goal from RickeyBarnes. The teams exchanged the lead several times with Loyd Starholding onto a 45-44 edge going in to the fourth quarter.
Contributing to the Wesson win with 8 points, 4 steals and 4assists was Cody King. Josh Hunt followed with 6 points and 7rebounds. Also pulling down 7 rebounds was Matthew Cliburn.
For Loyd Star, the Hornets placed 4 players in double figures.Barnes had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.Henderson finished with 14 points, 3 steals and 6 assists. Pumpingin 13 points was Ron Jones. Thomas followed with 10 points, 7rebounds and 3 steals.

Tyler Lumley directed the Cobras with 12 points. Josh Hood firedin 11 points.
Loyd Star was led by Damian Otis with 13 points. Netting 10points was Joseph Shelby.
