Byrd’s 35 points lead BHS past Port Gibson

PORT GIBSON — Nikki Byrd enjoyed a career game Tuesday night,leading the Brookhaven Lady Panthers to a 61-40 triumph over PortGibson’s Blue Wave. Byrd, a 6-2 junior, recorded a triple double,scoring 35 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and blocking 14 shots. Shealso had 5 steals.

In the varsity boys game, Port Gibson defeated the Panthers51-41, despite a game-high 18 points by Charles (Bobo)Rancifer.

The Lady Panthers (16-4, 4-0) dominated thebackboards as they maintained their . Swayze Black grabbed 13rebounds and scored 11 points, plus blocking 3e shots and making 4assists. Monte Wilson had 3 assists and 1 steal.

“Nikki had an outstanding game,” said BHS coach Freda Craft. “Iwas very proud of her.”

Byrd was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line.

“Port Gibson, is short and young but they are quick,” Craftnoted.

The Lady Waves got 10 points from Katrina Wilson. They trailedOle Brook 31-21 at halftime.

The Panthers (10-9, 2-2) were led on thebackboards by Simmie Yarborough with 8 rebounds. Rancifer had 6boards, 4 assists and 4 steals.

Brook struggled with 31 turnovers. The Panthers trailed 22-16 athalftime.

“We passed the ball too much,” said BHS coach Ronald Hines.”Port Gibson is athletic but we turned the ball over too much.”

The Waves got 14 points from Josh Coleman. Brookhaven travels toMendenhall Friday night for division action.
