Lady Panthers romp; Mendenhall boys roll

MENDENHALL — Guard Jermecia Jones pumped in 14 points and theBrookhaven Lady Panthers roared to a 72-33 Friday night victoryover the Mendenhall girls in Division 6-4A basketball action.Whitley Shannon added 13 points and and Swayze Black 11 in theblowout.

In the varsity boys game, The Mendenhall Tigers trampledBrookhaven 90-60.

Brookhaven plays at Florence Tuesday and hosts Port GibsonFriday. The Ole Brook Classic is set for Saturday in SinclairGymnasium.

The Lady Panthers (17-4, 5-0) were led on thebackboards by Black with 8 boards. Nikki Byrd had 6 boards. MonteWilson made 4 steals and 3 assists.

“We had our best shooting night,” said BHS girls coach FredaCraft. “We shot 63 percent from the field.”

Mendenhall got 13 points from Kemekia Bullock. The Lady Tigerstrailed Ole Brook 36-18 at halftime.

Craft’s Lady Panthers will play Murrah Saturday night in the OleBrook Classic.

The Panthers (10-10, 2-3) were unable to keeppace with the Mendenhall boys (15-4). They trailed 52-23 athalftime.

“Mendenhall shot the ball real well,” said Brookhaven boys coachRonald Hines. “They were really hot. That’s the best I’ve seen themshoot.”

The Tigers are 4-2 in the Division 6-4A race.

Leading Brookhaven in scoring were Simmie Yarborough with 23points and Charles (Bobo) Rancifer with 16.

Jason Tillman’s 23 points paced Mendenhall.
