Port Gibson sweeps Lawrence County

MONTICELLO – Port Gibson swept a Division 6-4A basketballdoubleheader from Lawrence County Friday night. In boys play, theBlue Waves topped the host Cougars 63-52. In the girls game, PortGibson earned a 52-24 win.
The Port Gibson boys remained right in the thick of thehotly-contested Division 6-4A race, thanks in large part to asecond-quarter explosion. The Blue Waves outscored Lawrence County23-4 in the period, one of the worst quarters of the season for theCougars. LCHS led 16-12, after the first quarter, but never fullyrecovered from the second-quarter disaster.
The Cougars did pull to within 3 points, at 45-42, midwaythrough the fourth quarter, but it was all Port Gibson after that.The loss dropped Coach Preston Wilson’s Cougars to 14-7 overall,and 4-3 in the division.
Cortez McGee (19), Raheem Harvey (10), and Dominique Ratliff(10) all netted double figures for Port Gibson. Oliver Peytontopped Lawrence County with 16 points.
Port Gibson’s Blue Wavettes were also at hightide. They roared to a 15-4 first quarter lead, and a 25-6 halftimemargin. The Lady Cougars simply couldn’t find the basket.
The Grigsby duo, Regina and Eugena, led the way for Port Gibson.Regina had 13 points, and Eugena added 12.
Fiere Brown led Lawrence County with 13 points. No other LadyCougars scored more than 4 points.
LCHS fell to 1-20 with the loss, 0-7 in Division 6-4A play.
