Bears, Lady Cobras romp

West Lincoln’s boys made their final home floor appearance ahappy occasion Friday night in Jack Case Gymnasium. The Bearsoverpowered Wesson’s Cobras 63-40, led by Aaron Collins with 17points and Aaron Shaw with 13.

In the varsity girls game, Wesson dumped the West Lincoln LadyBears 48-34, directed by Perry Katherine Furr and Alexis Crosbywith 15 and 14 points respectively.

West Lincoln participates in the Division 7-1A Tournament thisweek at Salem. Wesson plays in the Division 6-2A Tournament atHinds AHS in Utica.

The Lady Cobras (13-13) raced to a 20-16halftime lead and never looked back. Freshman center Ann ShelbyDavis scored 11 points and grabbed 9 rebounds for Wesson. Furr had8 rebounds. Crosby made 8 steals and 3 assists.

“Our girls played good defense and I was pleased with theeffort,” said Wesson girls coach Hugh Webb. “We just had too manyturnovers.

Webb’s youthful girls are 3-9 in the division and seeded No. 6in this week’s tournament.

“P.K. Furr played her best defensive game this year,” said Webb.”Marian Allen did a great job at point guard and she is just aneighth grader.”

The Lady Cobras got 9 rebounds from Natasha Brown.

“We played hard but Wesson got some easy baskets off ourturnovers,” said West Lincoln coach Lane Young. “Wesson had a goodgame plan.”

Young’s Lady Bears (11-14, 8-4), are seeded No. 3 in thedivision tournament Salem. They recently lost standout guard KeriEasley to a torn ACL.

The Bears (18-7, 12-0), No. 1 seeds in thedivision tournament, concentrated on stopping Brandt Hood, Wesson’sleading scorer. He was held to 8 points but the Cobras stillmanaged a 29-25 halftime lead.

“Our defense in the second half was the difference in the game,”said Coach Young. “Shaw did a good job guarding Brandt Hood.

“We played good team defense,” Young added. “We must be ready toplay next week when we step on the floor.” The Bears play Thursdayat 5:30 p.m., in the semifinals.

The Bears dominated the backboards as Jeremy Byrd grabbed 8rebounds and Bradleigh Rice 7. Collins had 6 rebounds. Shawcontributed 10 assists and 2 steals as they outscored Wesson 19-1in the third quarter.

“We played a great first half,” said Wesson boys coach RonKessler. “We made too many turnovers in the second half and WestLincoln took advantage of it.”

The Cobras (12-14, 5-7) got a team-high 9 points from MatthewCliburn. Lonnie Reeves had 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Hood had 4assists.

Seniors Recognized

West Lincoln’s seniors were recognized Friday night. Theyincluded Rice, Shaw and manager Will Dixon. West Lincoln doesn’thave a senior girl on the roster.

Junior Varsity Results

In the JV girls game, Wesson prevailed 19-18, led by CarolineEdwards with 8 points. Seven points by Stephanie Smith led the LadyBears.

In the JV boys game, West Lincoln rolled to a 54-33 triumph, ledby Ron Berkley’s 14 points. Brett Rushing chipped in 11 points.

Thirteen points by Zack Fetcko led Wesson’s attack.
