Loyd Star whips Wesson Cobras in Division 6-2A

UTICA — Freshman McKinley Hamilton came off the bench Tuesdaynight to score a game-high 17 points and spark the Loyd StarHornets to a 64-46 win over the Wesson Cobras in the Division 6-2ATournament at the Hinds-Utica Community College gymnasium. Hamiltonnailed three treys in the fourth quarter.
The Loyd Star girls eliminated Wesson 69-39, powered by fourLady Hornets in double figures. Leading the Lady Hornets wereShannon Chester with a game-high 24 points, plus Laura Britt with17, Dakota Brooks with 14 and Haley Sones with 10.
In the other tournament games, the Amite County girls dumped St.Andrew’s 44-35 and the St. Andrew’s boys clipped McLaurin47-44.
Today, the Loyd Star girls meet Piney Woods at 3:30 p.m. and theLoyd Star boys tackle Amite County at 5.
Loyd Star 64, Wesson 46
The Hornets improved their record to 18-10 with the win. TheCobras finish the season 12-15.
“I was pleased with the effort,” said Loyd Star boys coach GeneBritt. “Hamilton came off the bench and did real good.”
The Hornets broke open the game with a 16-9 run in the thirdquarter to take a 43-31 lead going into the final frame. Loyd Staroutscored Wesson 21-15 down the stretch to secure the win.
Rickey Barnes netted 14 points and led off the backboards with16 rebounds. Matthew Henderson fired in 12 points and made 3steals.
Wesson, coached by Ron Kessler, got a game-high 24 points fromsenior guard Brandt Hood. Matthew Cliburn finished with 12points.
Loyd Star 69, 39
The Loyd Star girls, coached by Jan Delaughter, improved to 19-9with the win. Chester pulled down 9 rebounds, made 7 steals and had5 assists. Brooks grabbed 8 rebounds, made 4 steals and had 6assists. Britt collected 6 rebounds.
“We came out ready to play,” said Delaughter.
Freshman center Ann Shelby Davis led Wesson (13-14) with 18points. Alexis Crosby followed with 7 points. Hugh Webb coaches theLady Cobras.
St. Andrew’s 47, McLaurin 44
Trevor Hanlon led St. Andrew’s with 16 points. William Mayfieldnetted 11 points.
McLaurin got 16 points from Michael Young. Reggie Williamsfinished with 10 points.
Amite Co. 44, St. Andrew’s 35
Brittany Anderson and Brittany Patterson directed Amite Countywith 14 points apiece.
Leading St. Andrew’s with 11 points apiece were Olivia Wells andLaura Nicholas. Jesse Allen followed with 10 points.
