Sones leads Loyd Star over Wesson

WESSON – Sophomore catcher Haley Sones ripped a 3 RBIinside-the-park home run and a double Monday night to lead the LoydStar Lady Hornets to a 19-0 division win over the Wesson LadyCobras in a 3-inning fastpitch softball matchup.
According to Loyd Star head coach Jan Delaughter, last night’swin over Wesson clinched the Lady Hornets a spot in theplayoffs.
Loyd Star (15-9) travels to Seminary Thursday night for anotherdivision test. Wesson (2-15) is at St. Andrew’s tonight.
“We hit the ball really well tonight,” said Delaughter after thewin. “We need to keep hitting well.”
In 3 innings of play, the Loyd Star girls batted around 5 timesbefore the game was called by home plate umpire BuddyThibodeaux.
Following a scoreless first inning, the Lady Hornets came backwith 4 hits for 10 runs including several walks and errors by theLady Cobras for a 10-0 lead.
Loyd Star produced 9 runs in the third innings, powered bySones’ homer, to push its lead to 19-0.
“Loyd Star has a really good ball club,” said Wesson first-yearhead coach Tiffani Coquat. “We are very young.”
Brooke Delaughter (12-8) and Ariel Hunsucker combined for theno-hitter. Delaughter worked the first 2 innings with 6 strikeoutsand Hunsucker finished the third with 2 strikeouts.
Absorbing the loss was Mackenzie Rials who started the first 2innings. Stacey Lowery relieved her in the third.
Annie Smith ripped a pair of triples for Loyd Star. Collecting adouble and a single was Brittany Beeson. Lindsey Duckworth andDelaughter each singled twice.
In the junior varsity game, Loyd Star thrashedWesson 13-1.
