Three hurt in accident on interstate

Mississippi Highway Patrol officials say three people sustainedmoderate injuries in a two-car accident Friday afternoon a halfmile south of exit 40 on Interstate 55.

MHP Public Affairs Officer Rusty Boyd said 21-year-oldChristopher D. Smith, of Brookhaven, was traveling north on theinterstate when his 2001 GMC Sonoma went off the road briefly andinto the median.

Smith apparently overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle,swerving across both the left and the right lane, where he collidedwith the back end of a 2006 Nissan Titan, owned by WendellRobinson, also of Brookhaven. The accident occurred at 5:33p.m.

Vanessa Rembeyo, 28, of Houston, Texas, was a passenger in theNissan Titan with Robinson, 46. They were also northbound at thetime of the wreck.

Boyd said Smith’s truck flipped several times, and Robinson’svehicle rolled as well.

Robinson had to be extracted from his vehicle. The BrookhavenFire Department also had to assist King’s Daughters Medical Centerpersonnel in preparing all three victims for transport.

Traffic was backed up on northbound I-55 for over an hour as thewreckage was cleared.

KDMC officials were unable to indicate the medical status of anyof the victims, but Boyd said none of their injuries werelife-threatening.
