With the tragic events of the past week on the campus ofVirginia Tech and the grim reminder of how society has changed, itis comforting to know that area schools are keeping a watchful eyeon campus security.

It can take only a minute for the peaceful calm to be erupted bysomeone with an axe to grind or with deep personal problems, asapparently was the case at Virginia Tech.

While we may feel safe and secure here in Southwest Mississippi,one only has to look back to the incident at Peal High School inthe late 90s or quite frankly a gun incident at Alexander JuniorHigh School a few years back to know that violence can eruptanywhere.

School administrators and local law enforcement must becommended for their proactive stance at our local schools, andparents can feel a bit at ease to know a protective eye iswatching.
