Mom charged with child abuse

A 19-year-old Lincoln County woman was arrested Wednesday andcharged with abuse and neglect stemming from circumstancessurrounding the weekend birth of her infant son, authoritiessaid.

Tasia Renee Pendleton, of 3054 Cress Lane, facing a singlecharge of contributing to the neglect or delinquency of a child;felonious abuse and/or battery of a child. Jail officials said shewas released on a $35,000 bond Wednesday evening.

Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said the sheriff’sdepartment is unable to release the circumstances until theinvestigation is complete.

“This situation is still under investigation,” he said. “Basedupon the information we’ve received so far, charges were filed andshe was arrested on those charges.”

Neither Rushing nor District Attorney Dee Bates would elaborateon the investigation.

Sources close to the probe, though, said Pendleton gave birth tothe baby at her home and then allegedly hid the child in a bathroomcabinet. When she exhibited signs of ill health, she was taken tothe hospital where medical personnel determined she had recentlygiven birth.

Sources said the baby boy was found in the cabinet by a familymember and the boy was also taken to the hospital.

A family member who answered the phone at the residence but didnot wish to be named said both Pendleton and the baby are homenow.

“I can’t tell you anything about the situation,” the man said.”But the mother is going to take care of the child.”

Rushing said officials are working with the Department of HumanServices on the case.

“I can’t comment on the circumstances surrounding the case, butDHS has been contacted and are handling the part of theinvestigation involving the child,” he said. “We cannot releasedetails until the conclusion of the investigation.”
