Lawrence Co. outscores Magee in wild finish

MAGEE — The Lawrence County Cougars edged the Magee Trojans34-33 in a roller-coaster of a high school football game Fridaynight. With 40 second left, Cougar quarterback Adam Watson sneakedover from the 1-yard line, giving LCHS a 34-27 lead, and apparentlysecuring the Cougars’ third straight win.
On the very next play, however, Magee’s Terrance Greene hitMichael Berry for 68 yards and a touchdown. After originallysending his extra point team onto the field, Magee coach JimmyMangum called timeout and decided to go for 2 points and the win.The Lawrence County defense held, and Brandon Middlebrook’srecovery of the ensuring onside kick gave the Cougars the win.
“It was a wild finish,” said fourth-year Lawrence County coachMike Davis. “I’m just glad our defense was able to make a stop onthe conversion. We did some very good things tonight, and westruggled in some areas. We’re very pleased, and relieved, to getout of here 3-0.”
LCHS did improve to 3-0 with the win. The Cougars will openRegion 6-4A play Friday at Florence. Magee fell to 1-2.
The game turned into a shootout, with Lawrence County’s MathewWells (6 rushes for 169 yards) and Kendrick Hardy (14-97) poweringthe Cougar running game. Meanwhile, Magee’s Greene was racking upsome big yards through the air. He completed 11-of-19 passes for242 yards, and 3 touchdowns.
