Loyd Star stings St. Al

Sophomore forward Joseph Shelby pumped in 14 points Tuesdaynight to direct the host Loyd Star Hornets in a 91-54 win over thevisiting Vicksburg St. Aloysius Flashes in varsity basketballaction.
In the girls contest, senior forward Dakota Brooks fired in 11points to spark the Lady Hornets to a 48-23 victory over theFlashes.
Loyd Star invades West Lincoln Thursday night for 4 games,beginning with the junior varsity girls at 4, followed by the JVboys, varsity girls and varsity boys.
Loyd Star 91, St. Al 54
The Loyd Star boys (3-0) jumped on St. Al(0-2) in the first quarter for a 22-4 lead. At halftime, theHornets commanded a 41-18 lead as head coach Gene (Moochie) Brittwent to the bench late in the second quarter and throughout theremainder of the game.
“We played a real good first quarter,” said Britt following thewin. “Our kids took them out of their offense. Everybody got seesome action.”
Adding support to the Hornet win was senior center Rickey Barneswith 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals. DeAndre Butler came offthe bench to punch in 11 points and pull down 4 rebounds. Alsograbbing 4 rebounds each were Ron Jones and McKinley Hamilton.
Loyd Star nailed 7 three-point goals in the game. Leading with 2apiece were Julious Whittaker, Shelby and Keldric Smith.
St. Al, coached by Larry Smith, was led by guard Duffy Loel with agame-high 20 points, including 4 treys. Alex Lanier followed with19 points.
Loyd Star 48, St. Al 23
The Hornets (2-1) set the tempo of theevening with an 18-2 run on the Flashes (0-2) in the first quarter.At halftime, Loyd Star commanded a 30-9 lead and were holding a41-12 advantage going into the final frame.
“We got to play everybody tonight,” said Loyd Star girls coachBilly Vaughn. “We’ve got to have better play Thursday at WestLincoln.”
Laura Britt and Emily Vaughn scored 7 points apiece for theHornets. Britt had 4 steals and 2 assists.
On the backboards, Shuntell Dillion led Loyd Star with 10 rebounds,plus 5 steals and 3 assists. Vaughn had 5 rebounds. Haley Sonesblocked 2 shots.
The Flashes, coached by Carla Koestler, were led by senior guardElizabeth Mazzanti’s 11 points.
