Prentiss sweeps Lawrence County

PRENTISS-The Prentiss Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs swept a varsitybasketball doubleheader from Lawrence County Tuesday night. Invarsity girls play, Prentiss edged Lawrence County, 63-60, in adandy game. In the boys game, PHS got a combined 55 points fromKeith Hicks and Kendrick Maye to claim a hard-earned 80-72 win overthe visiting Cougars.

The girls game was a classic, with thetwo teams battling evenly throughout. LCHS led 16-14 after onequarter. Prentiss led 31-29 at the half. It stayed that waythroughout the second half, with the Lady Bulldogs leading 46-45after three quarters.

“Our girls played so hard, and executed so well,” said third-yearLady Cougar coach Vicki Rutland. “We did everything except win thegame. I’m disappointed that we lost, but I’m so proud of theeffort. It was one of the best games we’ve played since I’ve beenhere.”

Each team had four players in double figures. Samantha Showers hada “double-double” to lead Lawrence County. She had 16 points and 11rebounds. Fiere Brown and Candice Little added 14 each, and KaseyMay had 10. Brown had 4 assists, and May had 3.

The Lady Cougars fell to 2-5 with the loss. In girls’ juniorvarsity play, Lawrence County won, 31-13. Nicole Grandberry had 8points, and Candice McDuffy added 6.

Prentiss 80, Lawrence Co. 72

In terms of wins and losses, the Cougar boys continued to struggle,falling to 0-5 with the loss. In terms of quality of play, however,it wasn’t a terrible night for the Cougars, as they played perhapstheir best game of the young season.

Trailing throughout most of the game, Coach Preston Wilson’sCougars cut the Bulldog lead to 2 points in the fourth quarter.Prentiss pulled away in the late-going as Lawrence County wasforced to foul, to stop the clock.

For Prentiss, it was the Keith Hicks/Kendrick Maye show. That duowent off, with Hicks tallying 27 points, and Maye 28. PatrickDaniels also hit double figures with 13. The trio combined for 68of the Bulldogs’ 80 points.

Lawrence County landed 4 players in double figures. Leroy Fifer had20, and Timmrek Gholar added 17. Cazlyn Peyton and Ladarius Jenkinsscored 15 and 13, respectively.

Lawrence County will travel to Raleigh on Thursday, as the Cougarsand Lady Cougars take on Quitman in tournament action.
