MSA student hurt in accident

A Mississippi School of the Arts senior is in stable conditionat Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center following anaccident in Interstate 55 in Pike County early Wednesdaymorning.

Hannah Smith, 17, of Picayune, was northbound at 2:25 a.m. onher way back to Brookhaven from attending a Christian concert inBaton Rouge with her mother. She fell asleep at the wheel justsouth of the 22 mile marker on I-55, said Mississippi HighwayPatrol Sgt. Rusty Boyd.

“She was northbound and fell asleep and ran into the median firstand overcorrected,” he said.

When Smith crossed back over the northbound lanes, her 2006 ToyotaTundra flipped several times and landed off the roadway, Boydsaid.

Smith, who was wearing her seatbelt, was transported to the McCombhospital, where she remains in stable condition.

Smith’s emphasis at MSA is in the theater arts. A spokesperson forMSA said the school could not release any further informationwithout parental consent.
