Lady Hornets bruise BC

Loyd Star’s Lady Hornets used their superior size and strengthto rough up the Bogue Chitto Lady Bobcats Thursday night at LoydStar. Center Haley Sones scored a game-high 16 points and ShannonChester and Laura Britt scored 13 and 12 points respectively,leading Loyd Star to a 67-44 triumph in a Lincoln Countyrivalry.

The Lady Hornets raised their record to 4-1 on the season. Theyare under the direction of Billy Vaughn, the school’s athleticdirector and junior high basketball coach. Vaughn inherited thevarsity job when Jan Delaughter stepped down in August, citingfamily obligations.

“We have an experienced team and that’s an advantage,” saidVaughn. “Bogue Chitto played pretty hard but they are young. We hada good third quarter.”

In the midst of a major rebuilding project, Coach ChristiTerrell’s Lady ‘Cats showed their most glaring weakness last night,committing 29 turnovers, 13 of them coming in the third quarterwhen the Hornets went on a 19-7 surge.

Sones, a 5-11 junior, pulled down 7 rebounds and intimidated theBC girls. Early in the third quarter, as Sones drove for a layup,BC’s Kelli Howard collided with her and both girls hit the floor.Howard landed face down, suffering bruises to her face and head.She sat out the remainder of the game.

Britt grabbed 6 rebounds for Loyd Star. Her short jumper fromthe lane pushed the Hornets ahead by 23 points, 43-20 with 4:14 asthey outscored BC 10-zip.

The ‘Cats couldn’t handle Loyd Star’s half-court pressure andthe turnovers mounted. Guard Darcy Miller suffered a lower backinjury in a mad scramble for the basketball.

BC coach Christi Terrell questioned a no-call by the referee andwas charged with a technical foul at the 5:13 mark of the fourthquarter.

“Loyd Star has a really good team,” said Terrell. “Sones andChester are good.

“We have to grow up and mature and keep improving,” she added.”It was rough out there.”

The ‘Cats got 9 points each from Miller and Aneshia Dillon. Onthe backboards, Shelby Tobias led BC with 8 rebounds.

Junior High Results

In the junior high girls game, Loyd Star beat BC 31-18, led byTyrisha Patterson and Courtney Watts with 7 points apiece. JordanWilliams chipped in 6 points.

The Lady ‘Cats were led by Aliyah Durr’s 7 points. AdrienneWallace had 5 points and Rheagan Welch 4.
