FC boys stop Sacred Heart

HATTIESBURG — Paced by two goals from senior Matthew Lofton,the Franklin County Bulldogs beat Sacred Heart 3-2 in an overtimevarsity soccer contest.

In the girls’ game, FC suffered a 1-0 defeat.

FCHS will play host to district rival North Pike Tuesday nightstarting at 5:00 with the girls game, and followed by the boys’game at 6:30. On Friday, the Bulldogs play host to Loyd Starbeginning at 4:30 in Louie Mullins Memorial Stadium.

The Bulldogs (10-6) used Lofton’s two goals, which included onein the extra period shootout session to put the visitors away. FCHSgot shootout goals from Blaine Abernathy, Donnie McFarland, andDavid Brown to collect the win. Lofton scored one in regulation andagain in the extra period.

Sacred Heart, a Class 1A is located near Hattiesburg, won thegirls’ game 1-0, despite several chances at a tie by FranklinCounty.

“We had our chances, we just missed several shots,” said FCgirls coach Ben Yarbrough. “Our focus is one the remaining districtgames now. We must win out to make the playoffs.”

Both the Franklin County girls and boys soccer squads arecurrently third in the district race. Only the top two teamsadvance, following regular season play.
