BA avenges defeats at Columbia

The Brookhaven Academy basketball teams had put a mark on theirschedules for their game with Columbia Academy on Tuesday night.The two teams met on Dec. 15th, with host Columbia sweeping the twovarsity games against Brookhaven; something that doesn’t happenvery often.

In fact, the Cougars of Columbia had not defeated Brookhaven inhigh school boys basketball since the 1996-97 season. Brookhavengot its revenge Tuesday night in convincing fashion.

Brookhaven senior guard Sawyer Wallace scored a game-high 17points in leading Brookhaven to a 55-34 whipping of Columbia.Senior forward Daniel Lofton added 12 points and 5 rebounds as theCougars improved to 13-5 overall and 5-1 in District 4-AA play.

In the varsity girls game, Brookhaven’s Lady Cougars overcame asluggish third quarter to top the visiting Lady Cougars 52-42,avenging the earlier season defeat and boosting their record to19-2 overall and 5-1 in district play.

Brookhaven 55, Columbia 34

Brookhaven led 29-23 at the half, but Columbia openedthe third quarter with a 11-2 run to take a 34-31 advantage.Brookhaven responded, closing the game with a 24-0 run and holdingColumbia scoreless in the fourth quarter.

“We made some adjustments in the third quarter and thathelped us open our game up.” said Brookhaven coach Dale Watts. “Wegot smarter with our shot selection and started making betterdecisions offensively. Our defense improved in the fourth quarter,too.”

Sophomore guard Jake Reed added 10 points and juniorforward Josh Winborne chipped in 8 points forBrookhaven.

“Brookhaven played a completely different game tonightthan they did at our place.” said Columbia coach Reid McCay. “Theymade a lot of adjustments on both ends of the floor and we didn’tadjust to those changes. They shot the ball a lot better tonightand rebounded well. We didn’t get many second-chanceopportunities.”

Tyler Wilkes led Columbia with 8 points. TravisCulpepper followed with 7 points and Drew Broome and Derrick Belleach scored 6 points in support.

Brookhaven 52, Columbia 42

Senior guard Betsy Lynch scored a game-high 20 points and had 4steals to lead Brookhaven’s win. She was 10-for-11 from the charitystripe, helping Brookhaven erase a 35-30 deficit at the start ofthe fourth quarter by outscoring Columbia 22-7 in the finalframe.

Kelli Snider added 12 points 5 rebounds for Brookhaven. AnnaKatelyn Mangold followed with 10 points and 9 rebounds. KellieBrady pulled down 7 rebounds.

Cara Joyner scored 14 points to lead Columbia. AshtonScarborough followed with 7 points.

Junior High Results

In junior high boys action, Allan Allred scored agame-high 11 points and Christian Keene added 8 to lead Brookhavento a 61-25 win.

Josh Broome scored 10 points to leadColumbia.

In girls action, Summer Calhoun scored a game-high 12points to lead Brookhaven to a 46-27 win. Anna Lofton and LauraBeth Wright each scored 8 points and Terah Winborne added 7 as theLady Cougars improved to 18-0 on the season.

Hannah Martin scored 8 points to leadColumbia.
