Hinds AHS boys showcase skills

Ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, the Hinds AHS Bulldogs are the classof Division 6, too. Powered by Keesler Stewart’s 29 points andJaCorey White’s 22, the Bulldogs buried Loyd Star 88-51 Fridaynight.
The Bulldogs (23-0, 10-0) were locked in a close struggle withthe hosts, leading Loyd Star 30-24 at halftime. They outscored theHornets 58-27 in the second half and maintained their dominance inthe series.
“We do a lot of hard work in practice,” answered Hinds coachKeith Williams when asked about his team’s success. He has fiveseniors on his squad. As a team, they sacked 9 treys.
The Bulldogs finished with 4 players in double digits. KeithWilliams and Kendrick Washington each scored 10 points. Erik Burksand Washington each had 8 rebounds. Washington had 2backboard-rattling dunks.
Loyd Star coach Gene (Moochie) Britt was encouraged by histeam’s first-half performance but the second half was a meltdown asHinds heated up its shooting skills.
“We stayed in there the first half but then we quit,” saidBritt. “I told our players all week to be patient. You can’t runwith Hinds. They got hot and we missed a lot of shots in thelane.”
The Hornets (18-4, 8-2), holding second place in the divisionrace, were led by guard Ashton Fox with 12 points and 7 rebounds.Forward Glenn Thomas and center Rickey Barnes followed with 10points each.
Thomas had 8 rebounds and 4 assists. The 6-foot-5 Barnes waslimited to 5 rebounds. Ron Jones had 5 rebounds and 4 steals.
The Bulldogs went on a 10-0 run to start the second half.
Loyd Star hosts the St. Andrew’s Saints Tuesday for a divisiondoubleheader, starting at 6 p.m. with the varsity girls. It will beSenior Recognition Night for Loyd Star.
