Lady Bears advance; Bogue Chitto tumbles

BOGUE CHITTO — The West Lincoln Lady Bears whipped the SacredHeart Lady Crusaders 79-15 Monday night in the opening round of theDivision 8-1A Tournament at Calhoun Gymnasium.

In the boys first-round game, Salem’s Wildcats eliminated theBogue Chitto Bobcats 81-74.

In today’s games, the Natchez Cathedral girls meet Resurrectionof Pascagoula at 4 p.m., the Cathedral boys face Sacred Heart ofHattiesburg at 5:30, the Salem girls tangle with Dexter at 7 andthe Dexter boys square off with Resurrection at 8:30.

The No. 2-seeded West Lincoln girls (18-8) play Thursday at 4against the winner of the Cathedral-Resurrection game. The No.1-seeded West Lincoln boys battle Salem at 5:30.

West Lincoln 79, Sacred Heart 15

“Everyone gave a good effort,” said West Lincoln head coach LaneYoung. “Everyone got plenty of playing time. That is very goodbecause most districts your players on the bench won’t see muchplaying time.”

Leading West Lincoln with 14 points apiece were Talashia Fellsand Erica Farmer . Fells grabbed 6 rebounds followed by Farmer with4. Hannah Knouse followed with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 3assists.

“We are an extremely young team, being our first-year team atvarsity,” said Sacred Heart coach Betsy Reynolds of her 1-15 girls.”Hopefully, we can learn from this experience and do better nextyear.”

Nicole Welch led Sacred Heart with 6 points, 2 rebounds and 2assists.

Salem 81, Bogue Chitto 74

The Bogue Chitto boys (8-15) outscored Salem 29-25 in the fourthquarter but could not overcome an 11-point, 56-45, deficit cominginto the final frame. At halftime, Salem led Bogue Chitto39-29.

“We played hard but we came up short,” said Bogue Chitto boyscoach Gareth Sartin. “Our shots were not falling for us tonight.I’m proud of my guys’ effort they gave me.”

Brian Robinson pumped in 26 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, made 5steals and had 4 assists for the Bobcats. Byron Kersee fired in 14points and pulled down 7 rebounds. Justin London netted 13 pointsand collected 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Finishing with 11points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists was Seth Avants.

“We played well and hustled,” said Salem boys coach KennethMurphy. “We shot well. Bogue Chitto made a comeback. But we foughthard to win. We have to do better against West Lincoln.”

Aarion Gaines led Salem (8-15) with 27 points, 7 rebounds, 4steals and 3 assists. Collecting 14 points, 9 rebounds and 3 stealswas Byron Carr. Shannon Ratcliff scored 11 points and pulled down 6rebounds.
