Hornets boot Enterprise

FLORENCE– A 13-day layoff didn’t hurt the Loyd Star HornetsWednesday night. Powered by 6-foot-2 senior forward Ron Jones’triple-double of 17 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, the Hornetseliminated the Enterprise Yellow Jackets 84-51 Wednesday night inthe Division 6-2A Tournament quarterfinals in the McLaurin HighSchool gym. Jones also blocked 3 shots.

In the other tourney boys game, St. Andrew’s knocked off MadisonSt. Joseph 68-62.

The No. 2 seed Loyd Star boys play tonight at 8:30 against St.Andrew’s At 5:30, No. 1 Hinds AHS squares off against McLaurin.

Loyd Star 84, Enterprise 51

The Loyd Star boys, coached by Gene (Moochie) Britt, improved to19-5 with the win.

“We played really good tonight,” said Britt after the win. “Weplayed well as a team tonight. Enterprise really played hard.”

Other players scoring in double figures for the Hornets wereGlenn Thomas with 15 points, Rickey Barnes and Joseph Shelby with10 apiece. Barnes grabbed 6 rebounds and blocked 3 shots. DeAndreButler led with 7 steals.

Enterprise, seeded No. 7 and coached by Josh Bass, finished theseason 3-26.

Pacing the Jackets with 14 points was Austin Everett. Firing in11 points was Matt Price.

Loyd Star outscored Enterprise 25-5 in the first quarter and25-16 in the second quarter for a 50-21 lead at the half.

St. Andrew’s 68, St. Joseph 62

Scoring a game-high 32 points for St. Andrew’s was MichaelHalford. Trevor Hanlon fired in 15 points.

St. Joseph got 24 points from Keith Barnes. Stephen Cofer andRaphael Johnson netted 11 points apiece.
