Diamond Wolves split pair with Hinds Eagles

RAYMOND — The Co-Lin Wolves baseball team split a Wednesdayafternoon doubleheader with the Hinds Eagles. Co-Lin won the opener4-3 in extra innings but fell to Hinds 7-2 in the finale, derailedby 7 errors.
Friday, Co-Lin (3-2) will host SE Iowa at noon and Kaskaskia(Ill.) at 6 p.m.
According to Co-Lin head baseball coach Keith Case, All-Americansophomore shortstop Steven Gauthe’ is temporarily out of actionafter being hit in the right eye during practice Tuesdayafternoon.
Co-Lin 4, Hinds 3
Brock Campbell (1-0) took over for starter Brandt Hinton in theseventh inning to take the win. Hinton worked the first 6 innings,allowing 3 runs on 7 hits, struck out 3 batters and walked 1 .Campbell pitched the final 3 innings with 1 walk and 4strikeouts.
Powering the Wolves with a pair of doubles each were Paul Davisand Cameron Logan. Montez Chatman singled twice. TaeByus Smith,Timmy Foster and Jordan Toney singled.
In the losing cause, starter Brandon Martin allowed 3 runs on 6hits, struck out 3 and walked 2. Chris Ferriss (0-1) took over inthe sixth inning and went 3 2/3 innings with 3 hits allowed and 4strikeouts.
For Hinds, Eric Douglas hit 3 singles. Davis Money and JonathanEttinger both doubled.
“It was a ball game that went two extra innings,” said Case.”Our pitchers pitched well. In the top of the ninth, we were ableto etch out a run. It was a good way to start the day.”
In the ninth inning, Chatman ripped an infield single andadvanced to second base on a ground ball by Jordan Chaney. Chatmanstole third base. With 1 out, Josh Coone’s sacrifice fly scoredChatman.
Hinds 7, Co-Lin 2
In the second game, starter Joseph Evans absorbed the loss.Evans worked for 2.2 innings, allowing 6 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits,struck out 3 batters, walked 2 and hits 3 batters. Also seeingaction on the mound were Ian Ferrell (3) and Avery Mathes (6).
“Defensively, we did not play well,” said Case. ” We did notcome back well for its. Hinds had only 1 earned run.
“We did not play defense behind the pitchers,” stated Case. “Wehad seven guys to make an errors. We left runners in scoringposition three times.”
According to Case, third baseman Timmy Foster tweaked hishamstring and was taken out of the game for precautionarymeasures.
“Hinds has a really good ball club,” added Case. “We had thechance to win two ball games and we didn’t.”
Chatman doubled and singled twice for the Wolves. Logan doubled.Mitch Pappas and Smith singled.
