Wesson rallies past Loyd Star

The Wesson Cobras rallied from a 2-0 deficit to hand the hostLoyd Star Hornets a 7-3 Division 6-2A defeat Wednesday afternoon onSmith Field. The loss ended Loyd Star ‘s unbeaten winning streak ateight games.

“We got a couple of hits when we needed them,” said Wesson headbaseball coach Hugh Knight. “Loyd Star’s pitcher (Evan Smith) keptthe ball in good location. Caleb Broome did a good job for us.Defensively we played a lot better. We looked a lot better on thefield.”

The winning hurler was Broome (1-1) with 6 strikeouts, 5 walksand 3 runs allowed on 3 hits.

“Some of the young guys are stepping up,” added Knight. “KyleCross ( freshman) got a big hit,” referring to his 2-run homer.

Absorbing the loss was Smith (3-1) with 4 strikeouts, 4 walksand 6 runs allowed on 8 hits.

“Evan pitched good enough to win,” said Loyd Star head baseballcoach Jonathan Breakfield. “Wesson came ready to play.”

Following a scoreless first inning, Loyd Star picked up 2 runsin the bottom of the second for a 2-0 lead.

Wesson came back to tie the game at 2-all in the top of thefourth. The Cobras took the lead at 4-3 in the top of the fifthwith 2 runs.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Hornets scored 1 run to cut thedeficit to 4-3.

The Cobras scored 1 run in the top of the sixth for a 5-3advantage.

Cross’s 2-run homer gave Wesson a 7-3 lead in the top of theseventh and the Cobrs held on for the win. Both teams committed 2errors.

At the plate, Wesson outhit Loyd Star 8-3.

For Loyd Star, Drew Weaver led the offensive with an RBI double.Singling were Travis Keene and Kory Allen.

“We’re not swinging the bats well,” added Breakfield.

Gage Wilson and Broome each doubled and singled. Hitting safelywere Chris Fink, Jonathan Grace and Matt S. Smith,

Loyd Star (8-1, 2-1) hosts Bassfield for a doubleheaderSaturday, beginning at noon. Wesson resumes play on Tuesday, March18 ,hosting Franklin County for a pair of makeup games beginning 5p.m.
