Helmstetter handcuffs Wesson with arm, bat

WESSON — Brookhaven sophomore hurler Nick Helmstetter tossed a1-hitter at Cobra Field Saturday afternoon; thus authoring a 13-0shutout of the homestanding Wesson Cobras. Helmstetter also aidedhis cause at the plate with a pair of home runs, plus a double, 2runs scored and 5 RBIs. On the mound, he walked 2 and struck out 4Cobra batters.
Brookhaven and Wesson played to a 5-5 deadlock in the JVgame.
Brookhaven hosts Mendenhall Tuesday night for a key Division6-4A test. The JV/varsity doubleheader begins at 5 p.m. Wessontravels to McLaurin Tuesday for an important 6-2A series.

“Nick had a good all-around day today,” said Panther head coachRandy Spring. “He hit the ball well today.”
Ole Brook (11-6) got 11 of their 14 hits in the game for the topof the batting order.
In addition to Helmstetter’s 3 hits, senior first baseman PaxtonKing had a single, a double, a triple and 3 RBIs. Shortstop BudBritt had 3 singles. Cody Ratcliff singled and homered.
“We got some good hits today,” added Coach Spring.
The Panthers got consecutive homers from Helmstetter andRatcliff in the top of the fifth. Helmstetter’s solo blast came inthe fourth.
Wesson (6-5) was held to a second inning single by Sid Cauthern.The Cobras are under the direction of head coach Hugh Knight.
Pitcher Caleb Broome suffered the loss for the Cobras. In 2.1innings, he gave 7 runs (6 earned), 6 hits, 6 walks and astrikeout. Alan Stegall tossed the final 2.2 innings.
