Man dies in house fire

A Lawrence County man is dead after being trapped in a fire thatdestroyed his home Saturday night, authorities said.

Lawrence County Sheriff Joel Thames said the home of 54-year-oldJamie Paul Johnson at 130 J.W. Miller Road in Jayess was fullyinvolved when Topeka volunteer firefighters arrived on thescene.

“Mr. Johnson’s son advised them that his dad was still insidethe house, but it was too hot for them to be able to go in,” saidThames. “The fire department went in there once they had enoughwater to cool it down to where they could enter it, and they foundMr. Johnson.”

Lawrence County Coroner Sidney Fortenberry said Johnson diedaround 10:30 p.m. Saturday. The coroner said Johnson’s body hasbeen taken to Jackson for an autopsy to determine the actual causeof death.

“The cause of death is still undetermined, but we know it’sassociated with the fire,” Fortenberry said. “That’s all we knowright now.”

The home was also a total loss.

Johnson’s funeral arrangements, which are incomplete, are beinghandled by Wilson’s Funeral Home in Monticello.
