Sontag teen dies in mishap

A Friday night wreck near Sontag has claimed the life of aLawrence County High School student.
Megan Bass, 15, of 200 Mose Hillard Road, Sontag, was killedFriday night around 10:30 p.m. when the car she was riding in slidbroadside into a tree, said Lawrence County Coroner SidneyFortenberry.
Fortenberry said the accident occurred near the intersection ofB. F. Davis Road and Smith Ferry Road on the north side of Sontag.The vehicle, a 1993 Saturn XL2, which was traveling south,fishtailed through loose gravel while rounding a curb.
“The back wheels came on around, and that’s when the vehicle hitthe tree in a side-sliding motion,” Fortenberry said.
Fortenberry said the vehicle impacted the tree on the right rearpassenger-side door, where Bass was seated, killing her on impact.He said she was not wearing a seatbelt.
After the initial impact, Fortenberry said the vehicle spunaround and hit another tree head-on.
Monticello Volunteer Fire Department Chief Robert Patterson saidBass was accompanied by six other people in the car, all of whichwere injured. He said at least two of the other passengers wereairlifted from the scene. Patterson did not know the identities orcurrent condition of the other passengers.
Patterson used the Jaws of Life to remove Bass from thewreckage, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wilson’s Funeral Home in Monticello are in charge ofarrangements, which are pending.
