Fire nearly destroys Storm Avenue home

A home fire on Storm Avenue did substantial damage Friday night,though the owner and his dog were not harmed.

Neighbors said Daryl Durr, a self-employed travel agent, wasasleep on the couch in his home at 575 Storm Avenue when he awoketo the smell of smoke at 8:23 p.m. Friday. He was seen later on thescene with his dog, both unharmed by the smoke and flames.

Brookhaven Fire Department was dispatched and arrived on thescene at 8:27 p.m. Firefighters said when the trucks arrived, heavyflames and smoke were already visible, seeming to be heaviest inthe west end of the home next to the carport area.

Firefighters knocked the flames down in about 10 minutes,officials said, and used fans to ventilate the smoke from thehome.

BFD Shift Captain Randy Sykes said the cause of the fire isstill under investigation.

Officials estimated the home sustained 80 percent damage, andthere was substantial smoke damage throughout the house. Contentdamage was estimated at 80 percent as well. A boat and a car underthe carport were also damaged by the heat and flames.
