Student killed in ATV accident

A Lawrence County High School student died Monday as a result ofan ATV crash over the holiday weekend, officials said.
Lawrence County Coroner Sidney Fortenberry said Clifton WarrenWayne Tynes, 15, was killed when his four-wheeler collided with apickup truck. He said the accident occurred at the intersection ofLight Plant Road and Highway 27 South on Sunday.
Sheriff Joel Thames said it appeared Tynes had pulled out infront of the truck. He was taken to Lawrence County Hospital andthen airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
“He underwent surgery there and never recovered from it,”Fortenberry said.
Fortenberry said Tynes was pronounced dead at UMC at 1:32 p.m.Monday.
Thames said four-wheelers are not supposed to be driven on theroads in Lawrence County, in accordance with state laws.
“It’s a statewide law that four-wheelers are not consideredapproved road machines,” he said, adding that he hoped that thetragedy would remind other young people to keep their ATVs off theroads.
Officials said Tynes’ family is meeting with Wilson’s FuneralHome Wednesday morning to make arrangements for his funeral.
