LCHS girls clip Ole Brook

It was another installment of the Brookhaven/Lawrence Countyslowpitch softball series Monday evening at the Lady PantherSoftball Complex. In a makeup game, the Lady Cougars took advantageof 5 Ole Brook errors to post an important 8-6 Division 6-4A winover the Lady Panthers.

The win was not secured until Lawrence Co. snuffed out a furiousLady Panther rally in the bottom of the seventh.

With the win, Lawrence Co., coached by Courtney Shivers,improved to 13-5 overall and 4-0 in the division. The LadyPanthers, under the direction of Lisa Covington, fell to 9-9overall and 5-2 in the division race.

Lawrence Co. defeated Brookhaven 12-6 in the preliminary JVgame.

Brookhaven travels to Lawrence County today for a JV/Varsitydoubleheader, beginning at 5 p.m.

Lawrence Co. 8, Brookhaven 6

LCHS used the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead on arun scored by Jessie Alexander. Alexander reached base on a singlewith 1 out.

Brookhaven took its first and only lead of the game at 3-1 inthe third. Catcher Christen Benson doubled. Erica Bridwell andBrittany Bateman hit consecutive singles. Bateman’s base hit scoredBenson. Hannah Lowman reached on an error to load the bases;allowing Bridwell to score.

With 1 out, Casey Risher singled to load the bases. SabrinaDelaughter’s sacrifice fly to left plated Bateman.

The Lady Cougars responded with 4 runs in the fourth to reclaimthe lead at 5-3. Allie Harris, Kristen Sauls Hannah Calcote andcatcher Kayla Byrd scored, with the aid of a pair of Brookhavenmiscues.

“We made too many errors in the game,” Coach Covington said.

In the fifth, the Lady Panthers cut their deficit to 5-4.Sabrina Delaughter’s second sacrifice fly of the game scoredLowman, who had reached on a single earlier in the inning.

LCHS would add 3 insurance runs in the seventh from Tyra GriffinMitchell and Harris. Harris and Sauls had RBIs in the inning.

With 2 outs in the bottom of the seventh, Lowman, Karlee Martinand Risher singled to load the bases. Sabrina Delaughter’s doublescored Lowman and Martin.

“Our offense got us some runs tonight,” said Coach Shiversfollowing the game. “Our defense played great.”

Lending support for LCHS was Natalie Herrington with 3 singles.Mitchell singled twice. Harris scored 2 runs.

For the Lady Panthers, Risher had 3 singles. Lowman, Martin andSarah Ayers each had 2 base hits. Benson singled and doubled.Sabrina Delaughter had 4 RBIs.

Shelby Mitchell (0 BB, O K’s) authored the win for LCHS, whileBrianna Ashmore (2 BB, 3 K’s) suffered the loss for Ole Brook.

In the JV game, Jennifer Long led the Lady Cougars with 3singles. Macy Givens, Georgie Walker and Jan Thomas each had a pairof base hits. Also collecting singles were Tara Harvey, KimberlyMcNeese, Emily TUrnage, Kristen Byrd and Emily Borne. Turnagedoubled.

For Brookhaven, collecting base hits were Brooke Hosick, OliviaJett, Rashana Stewart, Laural Smith and Carlee Ballard.

McNesse (4 BB, 1 K) picked up the win for LCHS. Hosick (0 BB, 2Ks) took the loss for Ole Brook.
